The number to know is 28 g a day. That is the Daily Value the FDA uses on the Nutrition Facts label: "The DV for dietary fiber is 28g, which is 100% DV." Most people do not get near it, and closing that gap is the single best-supported thing you can do for your digestion.
Are you actually short on fibre?
Statistically, probably. The same FDA guidance lists it among the nutrients that fall short across the population: "Dietary fiber, vitamin D, calcium, iron and potassium are nutrients on the label that Americans generally do not get the recommended amount of."
That is worth sitting with, because fibre gets far less attention than the supplements and fermented drinks marketed for gut health. It is the one with a defined target, a label you can read, and a documented population-wide gap.
What does fibre actually do down there?
NIDDK describes the mechanism modestly and accurately: "Bacteria in your GI tract, also called gut flora or microbiome, help with digestion", and "Bacteria in your large intestine help break down remaining nutrients and make vitamin K."
Fibre is largely what reaches that far. Your own enzymes do not break it down, so it arrives in the large intestine as food for the bacteria living there. That is the whole idea behind feeding the microbiome, and it does not require buying anything with a health claim on the front.
Where do you actually get 28 g?
From ordinary food, spread across the day rather than loaded into one virtuous breakfast.

Note what is missing from that table: a supplement. Fibre powders exist and have their uses, but the food sources bring everything else along with them, which is why the guidance is written around foods.
Why did more fibre make you feel worse?
Almost always because it went up too fast. A sudden jump commonly produces bloating and wind, which is uncomfortable enough that people conclude fibre disagrees with them and stop.
The fix is pace. Increase gradually over a few weeks rather than overhauling your diet on a Monday, and drink enough water alongside it. If you are going from a low starting point, adding one fibre-rich item per meal is a more survivable plan than aiming at 28 g immediately.
A workable four-week approach
- Find your baseline. Read the fibre line on the packaged foods you already eat for a few days. Most people are surprised in one direction or the other.
- Swap one grain. Whichever refined grain you eat most often, change it. This is the highest-return single move.
- Add a pulse twice a week. Beans or lentils into something you already cook, rather than a new recipe.
- Add a vegetable at one more meal a day. This also closes the vegetable gap, where roughly nine adults in ten fall short.
- Hold, then reassess. Stay at the new level for a week before adding more, so any discomfort has a chance to settle.
When is it not just fibre?
Digestive symptoms are common and usually benign, which is exactly why the genuinely urgent signs are worth knowing. NIDDK advises seeing a doctor right away if constipation comes with bleeding from your rectum, blood in your stool, constant pain in your abdomen, inability to pass gas, vomiting, fever, lower back pain, or losing weight without trying.
